The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released its Global Innovation Index (GII) 2026, revealing a significant rebound in innovation investment primarily fueled by Artificial Intelligence (AI). The report highlights a concentrated surge in venture capital (VC) funding towards AI and a new generation of deep science startups, even as the overall number of VC deals has declined. Switzerland maintains its position as the world's most innovative economy for the 16th consecutive year, leading a consistent top five that includes Sweden, the United States, the Republic of Korea, and Singapore.
WIPO Global Innovation Index 2026: Key Findings
The GII 2026, which ranks 139 economies based on 79 indicators, underscores AI's transformative impact on global innovation ecosystems. According to WIPO, AI is not merely a breakthrough technology but a force fundamentally altering how innovation and creation occur. The report's special theme, "Powering Entrepreneurs at the Frontier of Science," examines how science-based startups and university spinouts are converting cutting-edge research into commercial ventures, leveraging their intellectual property to scale new industries.
WIPO Director General Daren Tang noted that AI is opening new technological frontiers across all scientific fields. This year's GII findings indicate that corporate research and development (R&D) spending has reached record highs, contributing to the overall innovation investment rebound. However, this growth is characterized by a notable concentration of capital in specific areas.
